Working in health care allows for the opportunity to see how a multitude of well-oiled machines work together to successfully treat a single person. This is especially true in the case of single organ transplants, even more so when dealing with two. There are many organizations and people that play a part in getting the available organ to the recipient, and the process is streamlined and timed.
The hospital just had it’s first successful heart-kidney transplant. This is a fairly new type of multi-organ transplant, and we’re gearing up to do many more. The young man who was the recipient was kind enough to let us film him before and after the transplant, and the change in his energy, appearance and mood were astounding.
During the post-transplant interview, he discussed the goals he will strive to meet – play hockey, go back to his job. We learned that one of his goals is to become a mentor for other heart and kidney transplant patients. Aside from keeping healthy and living a long life, he is going to pack as much “living” as he can into his new lease on life.
